"The Beautiful Game" on Netflix offers a motivating and heartwarming sports drama, inspired by real-life struggles. Following Vinny's journey from hardship to opportunity in the Homeless World Cup, the film delivers an entertaining watch with unexpected twists.
In the sports drama “The Beautiful Game”, centered around the Homeless World Cup uniting the global football community, Vincent “Vinny” Walker, a once-prominent athlete, faces a downward spiral, leading to homelessness.
However, when approached by Mal Bradley, manager of the nation’s homeless Football Team, Vinny is offered a chance at redemption, igniting themes of second chances and new beginnings.
As the team journeys to Rome for the tournament, Vinny grapples with his past and the camaraderie among players, weaving a narrative of hope and resilience.
Nonetheless, viewers may ponder the parallels between Vinny’s story and real-life experiences of former pro footballers, adding depth to the character’s journey.
Derived from real-world stories of the Homeless World Cup, Vinny Walker’s character in the film finds inspiration from various football players’ experiences, rather than being directly modeled after any specific individual. However, one player’s journey notably parallels Vinny’s storyline.
Lisa Wrightsman, former player and now Managing Director of Street Soccer USA’s Sacramento Chapter, represented the USA at the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro after her promising football career at California’s Sacramento State was derailed.
Struggling with the aftermath of shattered dreams, she turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol and drugs until she made the courageous decision to pursue sobriety at 29 years old.
While residing in transitional housing, Wrightsman was introduced to street soccer tournaments by fellow residents, which she found to be raw and authentic, inspiring her to reclaim her life and move forward.
Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization aiding those affected by housing crises or addiction since 2009, now benefits from Wrightsman’s experience and dedication as she works to empower others facing similar challenges.

The Homeless World Cup is an annual international football competition where national teams compete in four-a-side indoor matches, adhering to a format of group stages and knockout rounds, with participants required to be homeless and facing social and financial challenges, aimed at breaking down social stigma and barriers.
The director of the movie, Thea Sharrock, explores the often overlooked stories of individuals who faced adversity, echoing Mal Bradley’s observation, “You never really meet the ones who don’t make it.”
While loosely inspired by real-life homeless soccer players such as Lisa Wrightsman, the film opts for dramatic interpretation, departing from Lisa’s genuine journey from hardship to success.
